Canarium Commune (Luzonicum) is native to tropical Indonesia, Asia and Africa. It is an evergreen tree commonly known as Elemi growing up to 50 meters tall. Several species of Canarium bear edible nuts and fruit.

Canarium secrete a sticky oleo gum resin from within the trunk, known as Elemi. An incision is cut into the trunk and a narrow strip of bark removed. As the resin is secreted it hardens into greenish amber coloured globules which are either ‘soft’ or ‘hard’.

Essential oil of Elemi is obtained by steam distillation of the resinous gum.
